7 Tips to Spring Clean the Bedroom

April 7, 2016 by Lisa Park + 1 Comment

spring clean the bedroom

Since we spend so much time in the bedroom, it should be a relaxing and refreshing place to be. My husband and I do our best to keep our bedroom picked up and our bed made each day. Making our bed is the first thing we do when we get out of bed in the morning. But there are a few areas in our bedroom where things collect in a pile.

So a few times a year, I go through our bedroom and organize and clean these areas. I feel like I think more clearly when the rooms in my house are clean and organized, and I feel that I accomplish more with my time. Here are 7 steps to spring cleaning the bedroom.

1.  Gather your supplies

Place in a container the cleaning supplies you will need to start spring cleaning your bedroom. Here are the supplies I carry with me in a Plastic Tote Caddy when I clean rooms in my house:

  • Duster
  • Windex Multi-Surface Cleaner and Anti-Bacterial Cleaner
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Wood Polish
  • Cleaning cloths
2. Do a quick clean up of the room

Take 10-15 minutes and quickly clean up the room so you will have a working area to do the spring cleaning. Grab all the dirty clothing and put them in the hamper. Fold and hang up the clean clothes. Pick up trash around the room and put it into the trashcan. Take misplaced items that belong in a different room in the house and place them into a box or basket. This will save you time so you aren’t taking one item back at a time. Make sure to take time and put these items away so they don’t sit in the box and collect dust in a corner.

3. Dust down walls, corners of walls and windows

Take a broom and wipe the dust off the walls and in the corners of the walls. Clean the air vents, door knobs, switch plates. Dust off wall art and lightly wet a clean cloth to wipe off the frame and glass. Don’t spray cleaner or water onto the frame. The liquid can seep behind the glass and damage the photos. Clean any mirrors. Wipe down the windows, window sills and blinds. See how to make your own homemade glass cleaner here. Use a vacuum attachment to clean the curtains or wash the curtains according to the directions on the label.

4. Clean bedding and pillows

Remove your sheets and comforter and wash them according to the directions on the labels. Machine wash your pillows using a liquid detergent. As you dry the pillows, place two tennis balls in the dryer to help bring back their fluff.

5. Focus on one area of the room at at time.

Clear everything off of an area, such as the desk and night stand. Clean the surface, and then place everything in it’s proper place. For items that don’t belong there, throw it away, box it up, file it away or place it in a container  so you can go through it and organize it later. Use a duster or vacuum attachment to clean the lamp shade, lamp and other decorative items in that area. Do this with each individual area of your bedroom.

6. Clean the floor

Vacuum the floor and  shampoo the carpet. If you have wooden floors, sweep the area and then mop.

7. Organize your closet

Go through your closet and take out the clothes you don’t wear. Place these in a bag to give away or sell. Take your winter clothes out of the closet and place them in storage until you need them next year. To keep accessories looking neat in the closet, simply slip shower curtain rings or hooks onto the clothes bar in your closet. Hang items such as purses, bags, belts or scarves on the rings and hooks. Clean out your dresser drawers. Make sure you completely empty the drawers so you can wipe them down before putting the items back. If your dresser is packed with shirts, place them vertically so they stay neatly folded and are easy to grab.

I love when I accomplish spring cleaning my bedroom because it feels so good to have a clean bedroom! What are tips you have to spring cleaning the bedroom?
