Old Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole

This Old Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole has a creamy sweet potato base with a delicious streusel topping. It’s a buttery and sweet side dish that is a favorite for the holidays and for family gatherings.

This old fashioned sweet potato casserole is one of my favorite side dishes for the holidays. I’ll make it for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It’s a delicious and sweet dish that even the kids love because it tastes like a dessert.

This can also be a pre made sweet potato casserole where you bake the sweet potatoes (or yams) the day before, prepare the recipe in a baking dish, and place it in the fridge overnight. The next day before your holiday dinner, bring it out of the fridge and bake it in the oven.

People have also asked these questions:

What is old fashioned sweet potato casserole?

Old fashioned sweet potato casserole is an American traditional holiday classic side dish. It’s usually made as a side dish to be served at Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.

Even though the old fashioned sweet potato recipe is a side dish, it is more like a dessert and tastes like sweet potato pie.

Who invented sweet potato casserole?

According to Tasting Table, the earliest written recipe for candied sweet potatoes, or yams, was found in American Cookery in 1796 by Amelia Simmons. Her recipe was titled, “potatoe pudding,” but historians believe that the potatoes she used were sweet potatoes because her recipe is quite similar to the sweet potato casseroles made today.

What is in a sweet potato casserole?

This sweet potato casserole recipe includes cooked and mashed sweet potatoes (also known as yams), eggs, vanilla, sugar, butter, and salt. For the streusel crumble topping, it includes brown sugar, flour, butter and chopped pecans.

When do you eat sweet potato casserole?

You can eat sweet potato casserole any time of the year, but usually it’s made around the fall and winter holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a traditional dish served at many holiday gatherings.

How do you make a sweet potato casserole?

Here is how to make this old fashioned sweet potato casserole with pecan topping.

Pre made sweet potato casserole

Wrap the yams in tin foil, place on a baking sheet, and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Note: If you bake the yams the night before, it will make it easier to prep this old fashioned sweet potato casserole dish.
