  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¼ to ½ cup water for dough to come together
  • Vegetable Shortening for frying
  • Toppings for the Navajo Tacos could include: chili, ground beef with taco seasoning, black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, avocado, olives, salsa and ranch dressing
  1. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking powder. Pour in the milk and stir with a fork until it begins to come together. Add enough water to form the dough. Cover the bowl with a towel and let sit for 30 minutes.
  2. To prepare the fry bread, heat about 2 inches of shortening in a skillet on the stove. Take a chunk of dough about 1½ to 2 inches thick and press it into a circle, stretching it out as you go. Carefully place the dough circle into the skillet and fry on one side for about 1 minute. Using tongs, turn it over to the other side and fry for another minute.
  3. Remove fry bread from skillet and place on a plate lined with a paper towel. Continuing making fry bread till all the dough is gone.
  4. Serve the fry bread with the toppings listed above or with honey and butter.
