9 Steps to Spring Clean the Living Room

May 1, 2015 by Lisa Park + 3 Comments

Spring clean the living room

I’ve been in the spring cleaning mood lately especially since I haven’t been able to really deep clean since having my baby. I do my best to clean my living room daily to keep it looking nice, but there are areas that attract dust and dirt that need a thorough cleaning every year. Here are 9 spring cleaning steps that I used to deep clean my living room.

1. Clear the Clutter
Start by taking 15 minutes and cleaning up the living room to give you room to spring clean. Throw away items that are trash, and place items that don’t belong in the living room in a laundry basket. Then as you walk into other rooms, you can put the items away all at once.

2. Dust the ceiling, walls, fan and light fixtures
Start from the top and work your way to the bottom by first dusting the ceiling, walls, corners of the walls, light fixtures, and ceiling fan. I used a broom to clean most of the areas that were up high. To dust the ceiling fan, use a duster with a long-handle. Or use an old pillowcase by placing the case over the blade, pressing both hands against the blade and slowly sliding it off. Shake out the pillowcase in the outside garbage, then throw it in the laundry. I used the pillow case method, and it worked good to get the majority of the dust off. Then I also took a warm, wet washcloth and wiped down the top of the blades. Also spot wash areas on the wall that are dirty.

3. Clean art and photographs on wall
Dust the art on the walls and wipe down photograph frames.

4. Wipe down the blinds, curtains, and windows.
Clean the blinds, and wash the curtains or have them cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions. Wipe down the windowsills. Wash the insides and outsides of the windows, take down the screens and wash and rinse them. Allow the screens to dry before putting them back.

5. Clean the couches and chairs
Use a vacuum with an attachment to clean the dust and crumbs from the couches and chairs. Spot clean areas on the couch or chairs using a spot cleaner. If the couch and chair surfaces are soiled, then use a carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment.

6. Clean doors, door knobs, and light switch plates

7. Dust lamps, tables, bookshelves, and decorative items around the room
Dust the lamp shades and lamps. Wipe down and dust the accent tables, entertainment center and television. Take the books out of the bookshelves and dust the books and the shelves. And wipe down the decorative items located throughout the room. Straighten items and tables, and neatly arrange books on the shelves.

8. Wipe down baseboards, clean air vents, and vacuum floors
Clean the baseboards. Vacuum the floors and rugs, and vacuum around the edges of the baseboards. Make sure to clean behind the furniture. Also clean and vacuum the air vents.

9. Clean the carpet and rugs
Rent a carpet cleaner or hire a professional carpet cleaner to clean your carpets and rugs. My husband purchased a carpet cleaner for me years ago, and it’s been so nice to be able to clean my carpets when needed. Plus, it doesn’t cost as much as a professional carpet cleaning service. If you have hard-wood floors, sweep and mop them.

I love having a clean living room, even if it might only be clean or picked up for a few hours.  🙂

I am actually planning a week long declutter/deep cleaning for my house once we get out of school (we homeschool). I always seem to forget to clean the pictures on the walls.
