7 Tips to Spring Clean the Bathroom

April 29, 2016 by Lisa Park + 1 Comment

spring clean the bathroom

I try to do a weekly cleaning of bathrooms, but there are some weeks that I fall behind. I’ve noticed, however, that if I regularly keep on top of wiping down or cleaning the bathrooms then spring cleaning them doesn’t take me hours.

Here’s what I do when I spring clean my bathrooms. First, I take a minute to gather all of my cleaning supplies. Below is a list of my favorite supplies I carry with me in a Plastic Tote Caddy when I spring clean the bathrooms:

  • Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner
  • Windex Multi-Surface Cleaner and Anti-Bacterial Cleaner
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Soft Scrub
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Duster

DIY Cleaning Products: And here is a post of cleaning products you can make yourself that include the following:

  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Homemade Windex
  • Tub & shower cleaner
  • Homemade Clorox clean-up
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • Mold & mildew remover
  • Floor cleaner
  • Tile & grout cleaner

Use these 7 Steps when Spring Cleaning the Bathroom:

1. Clear Out What Doesn’t Belong in the Bathroom

Clear off the counter, tub and other surfaces and place the items in a box that don’t belong in the bathroom. Put dirty clothes and towels in the hamper and hang up the clean clothes. Throw away any trash.

2. Dust Ceiling, Walls and Wipe Down the Windows

Working from top to bottom, use a long-handled duster or broom to dust the ceiling, walls and corner of the wall. Use a cloth to clean the window sills and wipe the blinds. Spray windows with homemade Windex and wipe down. Clean the crown molding, door jambs, front and back of doors, light switches, drawer fronts, and baseboards.

3. Empty and Clean Cabinets, Shelves and Drawers

Wash the inside and outside of medicine cabinets, linen cabinets, drawers, shelves or closets by wiping them clean with a cloth dipped in hot, soapy water. Place the items back into place. If an item doesn’t belong in that location, add it to the box to put away later.

4. Tackle the Shower and Tub

Remove the shower curtain and either launder it in the washing machine or spray and wipe it down. Spray the shower and tub with a soap scum remover. Try this homemade tub & shower cleaner or this mold & mildew remover. Allow it to sit while you work on other items.

5. Clean the Counter, Sinks & Toilet

Spray and wipe down the counter, sinks and outside of the toilet using a homemade all-purpose cleaner. Use cotton swabs to scrub tight spots on the sink. Spray and wipe the mirrors with homemade Windex. Use this toilet bowl cleaner to clean the inside of the toilet. If the toilet has rust or hard water build up inside, use this Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Lime & Rust Remover to get rid of it. Our toilets had hard-water build up and after using the product regularly for a few weeks, the hard water build up was gone. Finish scrubbing the shower and tub and rinse it well.

6. Wash Rugs and Sweep and Mop Floor

Shake the rugs outside, then throw them in the washing machine and wash according to the directions on the label. Hang them up to dry. Move everything off the floor and sweep. Then mop the floors using this floor cleaner or tile & grout cleaner. Empty the trash can then spray the inside with disinfectant and scrub it out.

7. Finish up by hanging fresh towels, returning the rugs to their place, hanging up the shower curtain and taking out the trash.

It feels wonderful to have a clean bathroom!
