This is an easy homemade strawberry shortcake recipe that really delicious. Add whipped topping and strawberries to the top to make it a perfect summer treat.
I absolutely LOVE this homemade strawberry shortcake recipe because my mother used to make it for me when I was a kid. It is easy to make and tastes delicious! And it is so much better than purchasing the dessert cakes at the grocery store.
Sometimes my mother made her own whipped cream topping (see the recipe below), which tastes so good. But to make it easier, sometimes we purchased the store-bought whipped toppings. Of course, the store-bought whipping cream in the spray can would always end up being sprayed into kids’ mouths as much as it was added to the top of the strawberry shortcakes. Oh, the memories!
I now make this easy strawberry shortcake recipe for my kids and they devour it when it’s placed in front of them. That’s how good it is!
Here are some questions, people sometimes ask about strawberry shortcake.
How do you make strawberry shortcake from scratch?
Here’s how to make my family’s easy strawberry shortcake recipe. All the measurements are in the printable recipe card at the end of the post.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the butter and sugar. Add in the egg and mix.
- In a small separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture until mixed.
- Add in the vanilla and mix.
- Pour into a greased and floured 9×9 baking pan
- Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
How to do you prepare fresh strawberries?
Right before you add the strawberries to the top of the strawberry shortcake, you’ll first wash them by placing them in a colander and gently rinsing under cold water. Place them on paper towels and dry them off. Then hull and slice the strawberries. The way to hull strawberries is by removing the green cap with a parking knife or a strawberry huller.

I tried this cake.
I have it 2 stars because it was easy for sure BUT I felt it tasted like pancakes and had too much baking soda. Not gross just not wonderful
Thanks for your honest feedback. Sorry you didn’t like it. It’s a recipe my family enjoyed, so I wanted to share it with others.
The recipe says baking powder, not baking soda. Could that be your problem?
No typically shortcake uses baking powder. It is a different texture cake than a regular cake, more dense…
I’ve actually looked up quite a few strawberry shortcake recipes online to compare my strawberry shortcake and all of them use baking powder. This is a delicious recipe that’s been in our family for years, and a lot of people have said that they made it and loved it.
Thought this was a quick easy treat! My family loved it! 😊
So glad you liked it! This is a recipe my family loves.
This is exactly the recipe I was looking for! It’s quick and simple. It has a nice dense texture that stands up to juicy strawberries and it’s sweet but not too sweet.

Has no one asked where the milk goes in the recipe because it’s not combined in the instructions?
In step 4 of the instructions, it specifically says to alternate adding the dry ingredients and MILK to the creamed mixture until mixed.
Going to try this tonight! Can’t wait!
I hope you love it like my family does.

Thanks for the recipe! I realized yesterday that my daughter has never had strawberry shortcake and she is 7! Fixed that problem last night and everyone really enjoyed it. I like it much better than the biscuit type shortcakes I grew up with. Thanks again =)
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it and that you were able to introduce this strawberry shortcake to your daughter.
This cake was almost like my family pound cake I have made for years but smaller and easier. Tasted yummy and everyone loved it

This is the very best shortcake I’ve ever had! It is so easy, and so tasty. Thanks so much for posting.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing with me that it turned out great.
Can I double it and use a 9×13 pan? I have a large party coming for Easter!
If you double the recipe, then the baking time will be different, and I’m not sure about the baking time for a 9×13 pan since I haven’t tried that before. You could do two 9×9 pans or you can try doing it in a large pan, but you’ll have to monitor how long to bake it, and it might come out different.
Delicious! This cake is not too sweet ! This reminds me of my mother’s recipe! Super simple to bake.
So glad you liked it!
I absolutely love this! Have made it 4x this summer, so simple and delicious 😊
Yeah! So glad you love it. Thanks for letting me know.
I used less sugar and also soured the milk. It was delicious!
Great recipe – quick, easy, and tasty! I love that it is delicious and holds up well without all the separating of egg whites from yolks or preparation of a big cake, or separate small ones. My go-to when I get a pile of fresh strawberries from the garden.
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s one of my go-to recipes for strawberries too.
Made this yesterday and it was awesome..loved the taste and the family raved about it…I will be making this again and again..thanks so much for this “yummy” recipe…
I’m so glad that your family loved it! Thanks!
How far in advance can I make this? if I make it 2 days ahead, how can I store it so that it stays fresh? My sister-in-law makes this often, and it is delicious!!
