Easy Homemade Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

April 22, 2020 by Lisa Park + 45 Comments

The Best Strawberry Shortcake

This is an easy homemade strawberry shortcake recipe that really delicious. Add whipped topping and strawberries to the top to make it a perfect summer treat.

I absolutely LOVE this homemade strawberry shortcake recipe because my mother used to make it for me when I was a kid. It is easy to make and tastes delicious! And it is so much better than purchasing the dessert cakes at the grocery store.

Sometimes my mother made her own whipped cream topping (see the recipe below), which tastes so good. But to make it easier, sometimes we purchased the store-bought whipped toppings. Of course, the store-bought whipping cream in the spray can would always end up being sprayed into kids’ mouths as much as it was added to the top of the strawberry shortcakes. Oh, the memories!

I now make this easy strawberry shortcake recipe for my kids and they devour it when it’s placed in front of them. That’s how good it is!

Moist Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

Here are some questions, people sometimes ask about strawberry shortcake.

How do you make strawberry shortcake from scratch?

Here’s how to make my family’s easy strawberry shortcake recipe. All the measurements are in the printable recipe card at the end of the post.

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the butter and sugar. Add in the egg and mix.
  • In a small separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture until mixed.
  • Add in the vanilla and mix.
  • Pour into a greased and floured 9×9 baking pan
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.

How to do you prepare fresh strawberries?

Right before you add the strawberries to the top of the strawberry shortcake, you’ll first wash them by placing them in a colander and gently rinsing under cold water. Place them on paper towels and dry them off. Then hull and slice the strawberries. The way to hull strawberries is by removing the green cap with a parking knife or a strawberry huller.

How do you make whipped topping from scratch?

Here is the homemade whipping cream recipe that my mom gave to me and that I make for my family. It’s delicious!

  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Add the 1 cup whipping cream to a bowl. Using a hand mixer, beat the cream for about 5 minutes until it starts to thicken. Add in the sugar and vanilla and mix until soft peaks form in the whipping cream. Be sure not to over beat or the whipping cream will turn lumpy.

    I tried this cake.
I have it 2 stars because it was easy for sure BUT I felt it tasted like pancakes and had too much baking soda. Not gross just not wonderful

No typically shortcake uses baking powder. It is a different texture cake than a regular cake, more dense…

If you double the recipe, then the baking time will be different, and I’m not sure about the baking time for a 9×13 pan since I haven’t tried that before. You could do two 9×9 pans or you can try doing it in a large pan, but you’ll have to monitor how long to bake it, and it might come out different.
