Homemade Baby Food

Homemade baby food Final

After having a baby, one of the ways we’ve saved money this year is by making our own homemade wholesome baby food. It does take a little planning ahead and time to make it, but it’s definitely much more cost effective than purchasing the ready-to-eat baby food at the store.

Years ago, I tried making homemade baby food for my second child. She didn’t like it as much. But that was because I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I also didn’t have a very good blender. The food was too chunky for her to eat. That blender has since broken and my husband purchased a Ninja Blender for me as a present this past year. It has been wonderful to not only make baby puree food but also to make smoothies. This Tropical Green Smoothie is our favorite. And my baby has enjoyed eating the baby food. Below are simple, homemade baby food recipes.

Introducing Baby Park + Our Nightmare Delivery

Baby Park

Most couples who are expecting a baby are worried about whether they will make it to the hospital in time. We had that same concern, and it ended up that it became our worst nightmare. Our baby boy, Matthew Ray Park, was born about 5:30 a.m. on August 6, 2014 in the car as we were headed to the hospital. He was 6 lbs. 5 oz. and 19.5 inches long. We are excited that he is finally here, but the delivery happened much faster than expected!

On the week of July 27, I had contractions almost every other day for 2-3 hours at a time. Then the contractions would stop. We kept my mother-in-law informed so she was ready to head over to watch our girls when we needed to head to the hospital. But we didn’t end up going to the hospital that week.

On Monday, August 4, I met with my doctor. After she checked me, she said that the baby’s head was very low. She also said to come directly to the hospital if I had contractions that started hurting.

At 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, I woke up to contractions that were starting to hurt. I thought it best to time them for one hour to make sure they weren’t going to stop again. At 4:30 a.m., I woke up my husband and told him that it was time to head to the hospital. He then called his mother and asked her to come in. She lives about 30 minutes from our house, but at the time the contractions weren’t too bad, and we figured we would have enough time to get to the hospital.

Once my mother-in-law arrived, we headed out to the car. I sat down in the car, while my husband went to put the girls’ car seats in my mother-in-law’s car, just in case she needed to take them with her while we were gone. Well, this is when things took an unexpected turn. Colten hadn’t quite finished buckling the car seats in her car when my contractions started to really hurt. I yelled his name and said that we needed to go now.

He stopped what he was doing and wasn’t able to finish securing the car seats. He got in the car, and we headed out. I told him to start driving as fast as possible. My contractions started to get more intense, and I realized that we might not make it to the hospital we were to deliver at, which was 30 minutes away. Well, we didn’t even make it a mile from our house, and I knew we were in trouble because right then during a contraction I felt the baby’s head pop out. I started yelling for Colten to pull over because the baby’s head was out. The Tooele hospital was about 5 minutes from our house, but we wouldn’t have even made it there because the delivery happened so fast.

Colten immediately pulled over across from Soelberg’s Grocery store at the intersection of SR-138 and SR-36 and ran around to my side of the car. He then put his hands under the baby’s head and the rest of the baby’s body just slipped out. My husband is so amazing with how well he handled the situation. He immediately swiped out the baby’s mouth a few times and got it to start breathing. I called 911, and they began to walk us through what we needed to do right then.

The 911 caller asked if the baby was breathing, which I mentioned that he was. She then said to take clean blankets and wrap them around the baby. Luckily, my husband was inspired to grab towels from the house right before we left. I didn’t think to pack any to take with us. The 911 caller then said to take some string and tie off the umbilical cord. When she said that, I was thinking, “We are in a car. Where are we going to find some string?” Well, my amazing husband within seconds took his pocket knife and cut his shoelace to be able to tie off the umbilical cord.

By the time he did this, the ambulance arrived. The paramedics then properly clamped off the umbilical cord and let Colten cut it. Colten held the baby while the paramedics helped me onto the wheeling bed and rolled me into the ambulance. Colten then handed me the baby.

While the ambulance drove me and the baby to the hospital, the paramedic checked our vitals to make sure we were doing okay. They then called the hospital to say that I’d be arriving shortly. Once there, they rolled me into a labor and delivery room. It so happened that my doctor had just finished another delivery and was already at the hospital. The nurse told my doctor that one of her patients had just arrived after delivering the baby in the car. My doctor looked at the nurse and said, “It was Lisa wasn’t it?” She knew it was me because she had just checked me on Monday. My doctor then came in and finished up things by delivering the placenta and stitching me up.

Delivering a baby in the car is something I hoped would never happen to me and my husband, but unfortunately, it did. I am grateful for a wonderful husband who kept a clear head through the whole ordeal. I am also grateful that there were no complications during the delivery, that the baby started breathing right away, and that he is healthy and doing well. Looking back, it was a scary experience. But now that it’s over and we can laugh about it, we will have quite the story to share with Matthew when he is older.

How to Save Money on Baby Products

 Baby Products - Save Money

The average middle-income family spends about $12,000 on child-related expenses in their baby’s first year of life! That’s a lot of money! So as August approaches, I am looking for ways to save on baby products that I need for when our baby boy arrives. Here are some tips to save money on baby products.

1. Shop at Second-Hand Stores and Yard Sales
When I found out we were having a boy, I was excited. I also realized that I needed to purchase baby boy clothes. I have bags of baby girl clothes in my basement, but I only have a few outfits for baby boys. Purchasing clothing, as well as other items, can be expensive, but if you shop right you should be able to pick up some good deals. Try finding new or gently used clothing and other baby items at these places:

  • Children’s Consignment Stores – Stores such as Kid to Kid, Just Between Friends, and Once Upon a Child buy and sell new and gently used children’s clothing and baby items.
  • Thrift Stores – They offer a wide selection of clothing for children. It may take some time to search through the racks, but you should be able to find clothing that is still in good condition.
  • Yard Sales – These can be a great place to find children’s clothing and baby items inexpensively. Since babies grow out of their clothing before they wear it out, you should be able to find outfits that are in good condition at yard sales. To save time, try to plan your trip during neighborhood sales so you can stop by more places at once.

This past week, I headed to a second-hand clothing store in my area that sells new and gently used clothing for children. I looked through all of the 0-3 month baby boy clothes and picked out 23 pieces of clothing for about $60 (see photo above). If I would have spent that $60 at a store like Target, Kohl’s, or Old Navy, I would have only been able to purchase 6-10 pieces of clothing. I now feel I have enough clothing for when our new addition arrives.

2. Borrow Items and Accept Hand-Me-Downs from Family and Friends
If someone offers you free baby clothing or items, take advantage of the offer and say yes. You might not know if you will use it at first, but there may be items your baby will use and clothing your baby will wear. With the items that you won’t use, donate it or give it away to someone who will use it.

And be sure to ask family and friends if they have baby items that are sitting in storage that they might let you borrow. Most of the time, family and friends are happy to loan items to help you out. I’ve been blessed to have family members give me baby clothes that they no longer are using. I also had a friend give me a changing table that she was trying to get rid of. This helped me so I didn’t have to spend as much money on baby clothes and items.

3. Purchase Diapers on Amazon
One way I’ve saved a lot of money on diapers over the years is by purchasing them on Amazon.com and using the “Subscribe & Save” on the right hand side. And the diapers ship to your house for free! Plus, you can cancel or change shipments for Subscribe & Save at any time. A lot of the time I can get diapers cheaper on Amazon.com than shopping at Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, or Walmart. But before I purchase diapers on Amazon.com, I always check prices on other sites too to make sure I’m getting the best deal, which would be less than $0.20 per diaper. If Amazon doesn’t have a good deal on diapers when I need them, then I will purchase diapers from Sam’s Club.

If you haven’t already signed up yet, and if you are a parent, expecting children, or are a caretaker, then you’ll want to sign up to be an Amazon Mom Member. It’s FREE to sign up!  You’ll get a free three-month trial, and you’ll receive these benefits as an Amazon Mom member:

  • An additional 20% discount on select diapers and wipes when you sign up for Subscribe & Save delivery (you can cancel or change shipments at anytime).
  • 3 months of FREE Two-Day shipping with Amazon Prime.
  • Exclusive discounts and deals for Amazon Mom members.

After a three-month free trial, you will be automatically upgraded to Amazon Prime for $99 a year, but you can opt out online after the free trial so you don’t have to pay.

4. Be Patient
Don’t feel that you need to pick up everything right now for the baby. Purchase the items that you really need such as diapers, blankets, clothing, and a few of the other necessary items. It’s okay to wait until after the baby is born to pick up any additional items you need. Because having a new baby is exciting, don’t rush to purchase items that will end up being unnecessary or you find out you won’t use it or need it. Learn to be patient and watch for sales on items you need.

5. Baby Deals
Here are some other deals to help save money on baby products. I recently ordered the free car seat canopy and nursing cover in the mail. These would also be great gift ideas for new or expecting mothers.

Score a FREE CarSeat Canopy ($49.95 value!) from CarSeatCanopy.com when you use the promo code ENBABY at checkout. You just pay shipping of $12.95. I was going to make my own car seat canopy like I did when my girls were babies, but by the time I purchase fabric and spend time sewing, the price of shipping really isn’t too much.

Receive a FREE Udder Covers Nursing Cover ($35 value!) when you use the code ENBABY at checkout. You’ll just pay for shipping, which is $11.95.

Get a FREE Seven Slings Baby Carrier ($40 value!) when you use the code ENBABY at checkout. You’ll just pay $11.95 for shipping.

Score a FREE Nursing Pillow ($40 value!) when you use the promo code ENBABY at checkout. Just pay shipping, which is about $12.

Receive 5 FREE Pairs of Baby Leg Warmers ($50 value!) when you use the code ENBABY at checkout. Just pay shipping and handling.
