As our family grows and we add another addition to our family this August, it’s even more important for us to spend smartly. I’ll definitely be looking for additional ways to save on baby products. So I was excited when Perrigo Nutritionals asked if I would review some of their products, as well as a new book, “Say Goodbye to Survival Mode: 9 Simple Strategies to Stress Less, Sleep More, and Restore Your Passion for Life”, by blogger extraordinaire Crystal Paine (MoneySavingMom.com).
Perrigo Nutritionals store brand products are as nutritionally complete as the national brands, but cost significantly less. They are sold under individual retailer brands, such as Walmart’s Parent’s Choice and Target’s Up & Up Store brand product. And store brand formula is nutritionally comparable to the national brands, yet are typically up to half the price. Plus, you can save you about $600 a year!
I’m saving most of these baby food products for when my baby is born. However, my two-year-old daughter just had to try the Squeezable Fruit, and she loved it! It’s okay by me if she eats them up because she’s getting more fruits in her diet. And I really think that most store brand products are just as good as name brand products, yet they cost less than the name brand products.
Over the past couple of weeks, I read the new book, “Say Goodbye to Survival Mode: 9 Simple Strategies to Stress Less, Sleep More, and Restore Your Passion for Life.” It was what I needed to hear! Since I’ve been pregnant, I haven’t felt well even though I’m 20 weeks now, and I really have just been on survival mode. Some days, all I can do is make sure our family is dressed and fed. I really like to keep a clean home, but I’ve just had to set aside cleaning my house. It’s been frustrating!
While I read this book, it was a good reminder that I’m at a time of my life where it’s okay that the house isn’t spotless and the dishes aren’t done. Crystal Paine recommends prioritizing a few things you want to do each day. This will help you manage your time and complete the most important items for that day. Paine’s book is also full of advice on how to save and manage money, and it contains practical ideas, like purchasing store brand products, and simple solutions that will help any parent become a super saver. No matter where you are in your life, whether you are a stay-at-home mom, working mom, single or married, this book is very inspiring, and I recommend reading it!
Here are Crystal Paine’s 5 Money Saving Tips for Families:
1. Create a Budget
A budget gives you parameters and purpose, it gives you boundaries, and it gives you freedom to live creatively within those boundaries.
2. Shop With Cash
When you shop with a credit card (or even a debit card, for that matter!) you can have your budget in your head and you can do the best to stick with it when you check out, but it’s so much easier to go just a little bit over here and there when you’re swiping!
3. Plan a Menu
When you have a plan in place for what you’re supposed to be eating each meal and you’ve already purchased the ingredients for those recipes, it’s a lot harder to justify chucking the plan for takeout.
4. Use Coupons
Coupons are a great way to save a lot of money on your grocery bill, but they can be hard to keep up with. Clipping, sorting, and organizing coupons takes time — so enter a coupon database! You’ll have access to printable and other coupons currently available, and it’s one of the most effective and efficient ways to save money on groceries.
5. Buy Store Brands
One way to save a great deal of money on your grocery budget is to learn to like and use a variety of brands. The sooner you can get over being a brand-snob, the more your pocketbook will thank you. For example, while I breast fed my children, moms who choose to formula feed can save up to 50 percent by switching to store brand formula, which meets the same FDA quality standards as expensive name brands. There are also coupons available at a website – StoreBrandFormula.com. This one simple change can save moms about $600 a year.
