Giveaway: Free Date Night Dinner Workshop + $40 Cheesecake Factory Gift Card ($160 Value)!

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to attend a really great date night dinner workshop, “More From Marriage”, that was taught by Kirk Voss from Amber Creek Family Counseling and Psychiatry in Sandy, Utah.

We were a little hesitant at first to go because the word “counseling” to us meant that something was broken and needed to be fixed. We have a great marriage, and we try to show each that we love one another. Sure we have disagreements like all marriages, but overall we have a wonderful marriage. After discussing whether to go or not, we decided to try out the workshop and make it a fun date night.

The class was 3-hours long (it went by really quickly and didn’t feel very long at all), and they broke it up with a catered dinner. Yum! The classes are six couples or less so it’s a nice intimate setting where you feel comfortable to ask questions.

It turned out that we both walked away from this workshop with great tips on how to make our marriage even better!

One of the topics Kirk talked about was to make sure to take 5-10 minutes each day to show a more emotional connection to your spouse. We may be tired after a full-day of caring for kids, doing laundry, washing dishes, and picking up the house again and again after the one-year-old turned everything inside out. However, it’s so important to take just a few minutes to make that emotional connection with your spouse and make sure that he or she knows you care about them and that it matters to you about what happened during their day.

Another topic Kirk mentioned is to “wipe the slate” clean every night. If we have a disagreement about an issue, such as how to raise our children, and we aren’t able to resolve it or come to a compromise by the end of the day, it’s important that we mention to each other and remember that “the issue is the problem, not your spouse.” It’s the issue that we are both upset about, not one another. The next day we can continue to communicate, discuss the issue, and try to come to a compromise.

My husband and I came away with an understanding that counseling isn’t just for the “broken” and that good marriages can be polished. This is a great workshop that takes healthy marriages and tries to make them even better!
